Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana Part D

After Rama shoots an arrow into the deep of the ocean, the king of Ocean rose up and told him that chief Nala would be able to aid in his quest. Nala immediately came to help Rama. When Ravana sent his spies to Rama’s army, the spies came back and told Ravana to let Sita go because Rama was too powerful. Ravana became angry at this and banished them as well, but continued on with his plan. Ravana lied to Sita and told her he had killed her love, but she quickly found out Ravana was lying.

However, as the battle is raging on, Rama and Lakshamana get seriously injured and become unconscious. They had Garuda come and healed them and restored their health. When the rest of the monkey army saw what happened, they all rejoiced and were ready for the rest of battle. The demons seeing the rage invoked their strongest warrior, Kumbhakarna. Kumbhakarna and Rama fought head to head in a mighty battle, and in the end, Rama was victorious. He shot a flaming arrow to dismember the horrid beast, and Kumbhakarna fell back into the ocean.

The battle raged on and many lives were lost, one of them being Indrajit, Ravana’s son. This stirred more hate and anger into Ravana’s heart. He sought vengeance. As Ravana rode out to battle, he met Lakshmana. Ravana threw a spear into Lakshmana’s heart, killing him. However, Hanuman rushed over with healing herbs and healed Lakshmana to his health.

Riding on the chariot of Shakra, Rama went out to fight Ravana. It was a long, hard battle because Ravana was so powerful. However, in the end, Rama shot one of his flaming arrows and struck the monster down. As soon as Ravana was killed, the demon armies disbanded and fled. Rama was victorious! Finally he could go get his bride. Sita was brought to Rama clothed in fine clothes and beautiful jewelry. However, Rama is angry that Sita has been with another man that was not him. Because of this, she decides to let fire judge her actions and thoughts. The fire returns the beautiful Sita back to Rama claiming that she has not been unfaithful to Rama in any way.

Finally, Rama’s banishment was over and he returned to rule the kingdom. However, people talked against Sita’s virtue because she was taken from Rama for so long. Rama banished his queen and she fled to Valmiki in the forest where she had two sons. Sixteen years later, the two sons battle against Rama and he realizes who they are. Rama asks the council about Sita again since Valmiki could vouch for her innocence. But she decides to give herself to Vasudhara and the god accepts her and takes her away with the praises of Sita ringing around her. A while after, Rama followed his love.
