Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana Part C

Rama and Lakshmana meet Hanuman who is Sugriva’s messenger. Sugriva is considered the best of the monkeys and a friendly power. It turns out that Sugriva was banished from his kingdom to due to his brother thinking Sugriva wanted to rule his brother’s throne. So, Rama decides to avenge Sugriva. Rama convinced Sugriva to meet his brother, Vali, in battle. The two armies fought intensely, and in the end, Vali lost the battle and his life. Sugriva was crowned the king and he got his stolen wife, Tara, back.

When the rainy season ended, Lakshmana threatened Sugriva because Sugriva wasn’t putting together an army to find Rama’s Sita. So Sugriva sends armies to the four sides of the globe. About a month later, none of the groups found where Sita was. Sampati, a vulture that could see into the future saw suggested that Ravana and Sita were in Lanka. Sampati told the heroes of how he lost his brother. Hanuman left to the ocean where he killed rakshasi.

Hanuman snuck into the city where Ravana’s palace is. Hanuman shapeshifts and is able to end us where Ravana is sleeping. He searched around to see where Sita was being held but he could not find Rama’s love. He left the palace incredibly dejected. As he moved on, he ended up in the Ashoka grove. Here, he suddenly saw Sita, but she was surrounded by demons. Sita will not fly away with Hanuman because she does not want to touch any man other than Rama. She gives him a jewel and tells him that she only has two months left.

Hanuman rushes out of the garden to tell Rama but he is wounded and caught by Ravana’s men. In order to punish him, Ravana sets Hanuman’s tail on fire. However, this did not burn Hanuman. He broke his bonds and flew out of the trap. He flew back to his king and told them everything, Sugriva ordered an attack on Lanka. The monkey army marched on with Sugriva and Rama leading the way.

On the other side, Ravana sought help from his council. Ravana’s younger brother, Vibhishana, advised that he give Sita back to her rightful husband because if he didn’t, there would be horrible consequences. Ravana was incredibly angry at this statement and banished Vibhishana. Vibhishana then left Ravana and joined forces with Rama.
